Abstract. The protection, care, and use of laboratory animals in Europe are covered mainly by international documents at the levels of the Council of Europe and the European Union: the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for Experimental and other Scientific Purposes, European Treaty Series and Directive /63/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council.

This book brings researchers up to date on both of these aspects of laboratory investigation and provides a comprehensive resource manual for management of laboratory rodents. It reviews relevant laws and ethical considerations, and it examines the role and responsibilities of mandatory institutional animal care and use committees.
